STEEL ENCHANTED
SCULPTURE BY VICTOR SCHMIDT
Opening reception Saturday June 12, 2010
6 - 10 PM
“Steel Enchanted” will be a showing of sixteen new works created from forged steel by Nashville artist Victor Schmidt. The sculptures reflect his predilection for age-old narratives, legends and myths. Each piece is formed with biomorphic shapes intended to convey both a fundamental simplicity and an understanding of something impalpable.
These works have not been cast. From raw steel each section has been forged, formed, fitted and welded, and still later they have been ground, filed, brushed and finished. Mr. Schmidt's manipulation of this material is masterful.
Victor Schmidt is an American who was born overseas and was raised in Germany and France. He has attended the College Stanislas, the Lycee, the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the University of Aix-en-Provence. He learned iron forging with Patrick de St. Andre at the Beaux-Arts in Aix and bronze casting with Sylvain Hairy in Dijon. Mr. Schmidt also apprenticed in an art foundry in Paris under the Master Craftsman George Gay. After moving to New York City he taught the techniques of metalworking and the mysteries of sculpting at The Pratt Institute for eleven years.
